Training in the right winter gear
How dedicated are you to leading an active lifestyle? So dedicated that nothing will stop you from achieving it?
If you enjoy going to the gym, then this is always an option but if your passion is outdoor training, no matter if it is swimming, cycling, bootcamp or walking, you want to make sure that you train in the right gear.
As long as you prepare yourself and dress for the conditions, your body can produce the right amount of heat to warm up your body and handle the cold.
Also remember… this is Sydney and not Northern Europe or Russia. We are a bit spoilt and should be grateful with the climate we’re living in.
Here are a few tips to prepare yourself for the months ahead:
Training in cold dry weather conditions
In these conditions it’s just a case of keeping your body warm.
- Ideally wear thin clothes and several layers so you can take some layers off once your body warms up. After about 5 to 10 minutes of training your body temperature should increase.
- If you do get cold legs, choose to wear thin workout tights or pants or just go the hard way and go for shorts. Remember the important thing is to keep your upper body warm rather than your legs.
- 40% to 50% of your body heat is lost through your head so if you get cold quickly, wearing a cap or a beanie might be good option.
- Training on sand in winter with bare feet will be cold and wearing shoes might be a very good idea. Normal running shoes might feel clumsy and finger shoes (Vibram) could be a great alternative. Make sure that they fit well so they don’t let in too much sand. The sand will start rubbing which can get uncomfortable. Check out the following link. https://barefootinc.com.au
- If you have bad blood circulation in your hands, you could wear light weight gloves. Gloves with spandex on the inside will give you more grip when working with fitness equipment.
Training in wet dry weather conditions
- Avoid wearing loose, baggy clothing. They become heavy and uncomfortable in the rain. Rather go for slim-fitting clothes.
- A wool-based layer will keep you much warmer than a synthetic top as it will absorb warmth when wet.
- Make sure you wear a waterproof jacket in the rain which is ideally not too loose either. This will make it easier when you’re running around and doing your exercises. A waterproof, windproof and breathable core-tex jacket is highly recommended.
- Bring some dry clothes so you can dress warm after a wet session. People often don’t get sick during a wet session but rather afterwards when their body temperature is going down and they’re still in wet clothes.
