Isn’t this one of the most frustrating things? You’re getting into training, starting to make some progress and seeing results. Then suddenly you get injured, sick or something else happens which stops you from training. In no time this can make you feel like you’re back to square one. Most of us have experienced this at some point. Check out some tips about dealing with injuries.

One thing to realise is that often in the short term not exercising will not give you any injuries or issues. On the other hand, starting a new training regime can sometimes go hand in hand with injuries. If there are any imbalances or weaknesses in your body, then these might come out and lead to injuries (unless they get fixed on time).

In the long run though, you are better off getting your butt out of your chair and exercising. Looking at all the benefits of physical exercise, you are way better off having an active lifestyle, even if it sometimes includes having a little niggle or injury.

So what is the best way to deal with injuries and without loosing too much of the results you gained?

Get treated by the right person

Depending on what the problem is, this might be your GP, physiotherapist, chiro practitioner, etc. Getting the right diagnosis, so you know what the problem is, is essential to get the best treatment.

Keep your lifestyle as active as possible and train smart

If your injury is not completely stopping you from training then modify the workouts and do what you can. If you have a shoulder injury, you can still train your lower body and core muscles. If your injury is stopping you from running, you can still do upper body stuff. On the other hand swimming, bike riding or boxing might be a good option as well. If you are not sure on what you can still do, make sure you get the right advice first.

Do your home work

Very often the person who’s treating you will give you some physical home work. Keep in mind that these exercises can speed up the healing process and fix your injury. I know it’s not always easy but it is essential to make time to do these exercises. Injuries which are often related to imbalances in your body such as weakness in the glutes, tightness in the back, etc. These type of injuries can only be fixed if you fix the imbalance and so the issue which is causing the problem.

Focus more on your diet

Not being able to exercise at full blast or not at all, often goes hand in hand with a lower calorie expenditure. Keeping your calorie intake under control will help you to keep balance.

Keep up your motivation

Last but not least and I think this is probably the most important one, try not to lose your motivation. We all get injured from time to time and unfortunately this is part of life. We can deal with injuries in many different ways but try and do it the right way. Don’t let them ruin your goals and stay focused. Change your goals if you need to and keep up the good spirits.
